The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education has worked with the idea for a long time - and was very happy to finally being able to open the center Wednesday.

- It has been a long pregnancy, so this is a day for celebration, Vice-Dean for Education at the HSL-faculty, Marit Allern, said when opening the center.

- We want to help you become confident writers, to be able to help yourself, she said.

Jill Wolfe promised only suggestions, no corrections.

No corrections, only suggestions

The students at the English taught master programmes are in the main target group for the center. Jill Wolfe will be tutoring the students.

She explained how the center would work in practice; it will be open twice a week and the students would have to make appointments.

- We will be working face to face with your texts and papers. There will be no corrections, only suggestions from me. I'm not going to fix your text, but I'll work together with you to polish your English.

- And you'll risk nothing to come here. I won't tell your professor or your fellow students about your text, she promised - in front of a laughing audience.

A brave decision

Pro-Rector for Education at the University of Tromsø, Britt Vigdis Ekeli, also congratulated the faculty with the center opening.

- A brave decision of the faculty. You have been working hard for it, and you have shown how it can be done when you really wanted it, she said, before presenting a vase - a gift with symbolic meaning.

- Flowers placed in this vase will flourish like students using the Writing Center.

More than 50 students had shown up to the opening, so probably the center will be eagerly visited - and the faculty will risk a flower budget breakdown...

The Pro-Rector presented the Vice-Dean a vase at the opening.

Open Wednesdays and Fridays

The center will be open certain hours at Wednesdays and Fridays this semester.

Check out the center's web page for more information.
