Emanuela Ceva talk "Uncertainty Calls for Trust"

In conjunction with the Ethics Research Group, Emanuela Ceva (University of Geneva) will give a talk at an extra-ordinary forsknings-seminar to be held next Wednesday.  The presentation will begin at 12:15.  Zoom participants are asked to join in good time before that, hence the zoom element opens at 12:00.

Zoom participants include Emanuela herself – she was due to visit us in person, but unfortunately for us, her plans have had to change.   It is great, however that she is willing to continue with the arrangement in hybrid form.  Thank you Emanuela, and we hope there will be another time when we can welcome you to Tromsø!

Title: Uncertainty Calls for Trust

Abstract:

Human relations of trust are generally valued in politics. But what exactly makes human relations of trust normatively possible and necessary? In this paper, I explore the institutional circumstances of uncertainty that make human relations of trust both possible and necessary in a polity. I distinguish three such circumstances of existential, epistemic, and normative uncertainty. I then discuss how different institutional circumstances of trust may arise out of different configurations of more or less moderate scarcity of such three kinds of uncertainty.

Jennifer Clare Heyward is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
