Side event on Arctic Frontiers: Arctic weather and climate change: impact and consequences for the society

There is an increased need to understand how changes in weather and climate relate to one another and what to expect in the future.

Dr. John Walsh received the Mohn Prize not only because of his pioneering research on the Arctic. He is also able to convey this knowledge to people and authorities in a way that makes it accessible and useful. To build on the great effort of John Walsh, this side event aims to elucidate impacts and consequences of Arctic climate change, with examples from the European Arctic, Svalbard, and Northern Norway.

We ask: What does climate change look like? How does climate change affect people and societies in the Arctic? How does it impact businesses and industry? What are the risks and uncertainties? What are the economic consequences? Does research meet the needs of communities? How to best prepare for future changes? Is communication and cooperation between climate researchers and those implementing new research-based knowledge good enough?

These, and other related questions will be discussed from the following perspectives: A local management perspective – from Longyearbyen, Svalbard; A researcher perspective: changes of the Arctic tundra: populations and ecosystems; Indigenous people perspective- president of the Sami parliament; and Mohn Prize winner John Walsh.
