Course content
This course helps students understand the Arctic Council and its Indigenous Permanent Participants, from the formation of the organization to the key issues it faces today.
Presented primarily from a historical perspective, the course will provide insights into the potential for and limitations of circumpolar cooperation by both states and Indigenous peoples.
Objectives of the course
This course sharpens students’ research skills and their ability to collaborate on research. It provides in-depth knowledge of Arctic Governance, international politics, and the role of international Indigenous organizations.
The students have the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge
The student has:
- knowledge of the Arctic Council’s history and structure, and the relationship between the two;
- knowledge of the Indigenous Permanent Participant organizations;
- increased understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the Arctic;
- deep understanding of at least one key issue of the Arctic Council from the perspective of various members and participants.
Skills
The student is able to/can:
- gather both primary and secondary sources for research;
- conduct a close reading and analysis of key documents in relation to key issues;
- write clearly and concisely.
