The working paper offers a narrative explaining that the rupture in relations between Pakistan and India in the recent years can be viewed as a product of the changing regional political landscape. Two factors need to be examined in this regard:

  • The regime in Kabul cemented its ties with India, especially after 2011, at the cost of acutely unnerving policymakers in Pakistan.
  • Growing Indo-US relations coupled with deepening Sino-Pakistan partnership drove a wedge between Islamabad and New Delhi.

The paper posits that Islamabad and New Delhi will keep struggling to make any substantial progress towards rapprochement in the next few years. This is because the aforementioned structural factors—connected with alliances and regional politics—will gravely impede attempts at bilateral dialogue and peace for the foreseeable future.
