Lunch lecture: Absorbing important information

How do different learning methods affect our COVID-19 response?

Welcome to this open lunch lecture in Panorama during Forskningsdagene 2020, where Chinwe Philomina Oramah, Dina Abdel-Fattah and Linda Stakkeland from the International Emergency Preparedness Programme at UiT Harstad, will discuss several different learning methods and their potential application in the COVID-19 response.

Traditional teaching styles focus on specific types of information presentation and consequently favor specific types of learning. Listening, reading, and “being talked to” are some of the main ways that information, both in the classroom and the real world, are shared.

However, research has shown many people absorb and remember information better when they are actively involved in the learning process. The power of stories, videos, and hands-on learning can be transformational. Memories linked with strong emotions tend to be more deeply rooted in our brains. In addition, memories associated with hands-on and practical experience tend to be stronger and long-lasting.

Knowing this, how can we foster better information flow and information absorption about the COVID-19 response? Importantly, given the need to have information reach across our whole society, different methods for how to share and use information need to incorporated into the international, national, and local COVID-19 response.

During this lecture, Chinwe Philomina Oramah, Dina Abdel-Fattah and Linda Stakkeland from the International Emergency Preparedness Programme at UiT Harstad, will discuss several different learning methods and their potential application in the COVID-19 response.

The lecture will be given in English.
