In October 2015 a fire breaks out at the Colectiv Club in Bucharest. 27 people lost their lives at the scene and 180 were injured – Romania’s worst incident in over 20 years. Multiple demonstrations erupt, resulting in the resignation of the government. Director Nanau’s film follows a team of journalists at the Sports Gazette newspaper from the discovery that additional 37 people have died in hospital in the months following the fire, because of the use of diluted disinfectants. Gradually, the multiple cases of corruption that led to the scandal are uncovered.

COLLECTIVE is a captivating documentary that plays out like a thriller. Alexander Nanau never sensationalizes his story, but lets the revelations and investigation speaks for themselves. This is a portrait of a massively corrupt system and the role of the press in investigating, informing and placing responsibility, as well as the obstacles that are placed before them.
