“How (and why) to work as an open scientist in the 21st century"

TODOS is pleased to announce a side event to this year’s Munin Conference on Scholarly Publishing!

Dr. Stephen Eglen, from the University of Cambridge, will present:

How (and why) to work as an open scientist in the 21st century

The term "open science" is gaining in popularity, yet what does it mean?

In this talk I will describe what I think the term means, and will outline my personal reasons for why I think open science is sensible.

I will also talk about the related issue of reproducibility in science.

In the second part of the talk I will then give some practical suggestions for adopting open science practices.

Although the seminar is designed with PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows in mind, it is open to all!

When:             Friday, November 29, 2019, 11:00 – 12:00

Where:            Nedre Lysthus Auditorium: http://bit.ly/330S8Ud

Following the seminar, Dr. Eglen will be pleased to continue the discussion over lunch. This lunch will be by registration only. Space is limited to 20 people, so if you’re interested, please register here.

Stephen Eglen bio

Stephen Eglen is currently Reader in Computational Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge, in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. His undergraduate degree was in cognitive science, psychology and computer science (Nottingham), followed by doctorate in computer science and artificial intellegence (Sussex). His research interests focus on understanding the development of the nervous system: How do neurons form connections with each other into structured networks? He works primarily on analysing and modelling of neuronal activity and development in the visual system. Recent work has applied these techniques to understanding networks derived from human stem cells and for neurotoxicity testing.

TODOS is an interest organization that works to improve the general welfare of PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers registered at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway. TODOS does this by adopting a double-folded perspective on our scholars’ activity at UiT: their academic working environment and their social life.

All current PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers are automatically included as members of TODOS by virtue of their status at UiT. TODOS strives to be a natural link between the UiT administration (at all levels), the universities’ permanent employees including the scientific staff, and PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers at UiT in general aspects.

The organization should be contacted concerning issues related to study conditions and professional development, economic interests related to the PhD and postdoctoral education, rights and duties at the university, research ethics, and ideas for improving social life here at UiT.

TODOS is not linked to any particular political opinion, union organization, or religious belief and is as such a neutral organization.
