Application deadline

Application deadline 1 June. Application code 9303 in Søknadsweb.

Type of course

The subject can be taken as a singular course.Theoretical.

Admission requirements

PhD students or holders of a Norwegian master´s degree of five years or 3+ 2 years (or equivalent) may be admitted (categories 3 and 4 above). PhD students must upload a document from their university stating that they are registered PhD students. This group of applicants does not have to prove English proficiency and are exempt from semester fee.

Holders of a Master´s degree must upload a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. Applicants from listed countries must document proficiency in English. To find out if this applies to you see the following list:

Proficiency in English must be documented - list of countries.

For more information on accepted English proficiency tests and scores, as well as exemptions from the English proficiency tests, please see the following document: Proficiency in English - PhD level studies.

The course will be cancelled if less than five participants.

Offered irregularly. The course will be cancelled if less than five participants.

Course content

The objective of the course is to present classical and modern analytical modeling of heat and mass transfer in building materials such as concrete, wood, and soil. A treatment of the classical heat diffusion- and Navier-Stokes model for heat and mass transfer respectively will be considered. Different kinds of transport mechanisms in combinations with various types of pores that typically appears in the same porous system will be considered. Limits of such models are analyzed and compared with actual flows. Modern trends of construction for transport phenomena in the building materials will be discussed.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge:

After passing the course, the student is expected to be able to

  • Determine the motion of fluid (liquid or gas) flow through the porous structure of buildings materials.
  • Understand the heat transfer in porous buildings material.
  • Know several strategies for handling the heat and moisture transfer in buildings material.
  • Evaluate the expediency and application for analytical modeling heat and mass transfer in building materials in research and scholarly development projects.

Skills:

After passing the course, the student is expected to be able to

  • Identify the physical parameters of flow and properties of materials in modeling.
  • Calibrate models using experimental data.
  • Handle standard constructions of heat and mass transfer in building materials.

Habits of mind:

After passing the course, the student is expected to be able to

  • Formulate mathematical and physics models of flows in porous media in a way which enables communication of research and development in applied sciences of transport phenomena.
  • Formulate and solve basic mass transport problem with various transport driving forces in different pores type.
