Master i medisinske laboratoriefag Charles Walquist Johannessen disputerer for ph.d.-graden i helsevitenskap og vil offentlig forsvare avhandlingen: Expression and functional properties of selected miRNAs in human cancer tissue and cancer cell lines
Kort sammendrag av avhandlingen:
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs involved in the regulation of gene expression, and they are often dysregulated in cancer. It is of great interest to study these RNAs to better understand how they function. Based on a large miRNA screening, which included samples from 108 breast cancer tumors and 44 breast reduction specimens, we were able to identify several miRNAs that were expressed different in cancer tumors compared to benign tissue controls. We selected three different miRNAs, miR-143, miR-145 and miR-126. Interesting discoveries were made when investigating these miRNAs, both in regard to their functions in cells, and when analyzing their distribution and abundance in patient samples from different cancer subtypes. This work adds new knowledge into the complex function and regulation of these miRNAs, and it contributes to a better understanding of these important gene regulators.
