A week before the rest of the student body arrive, the international students have their introduction to UiT, called debut week. This year, there are 712 international students from 64 different countries at UiT’s campuses.

One of the most exciting events of the debut week is the trip to Grøtfjord. At Grøtfjord, the international students can choose to go hiking in the mountain, which nearly 300 did, or stay at the beach to play games and sit by the campfire. It was at this campfire we got to know a few of the students, and ask why they had chosen to study at UiT.

Daniel is 22 years old and from Spain. He will be studying chemistry at UiT. “I had the choice between Poland and Norway, and as a friend had been to Norway before and told me about how the education here is much more practical, I decided on here. I want more experience in a lab. As for Tromsø, I was here in January and I fell in love with the city and the northern lights.”

Silvi is 23 years old and from India. She is at UiT to study public health. “I like the place and the nature, and I would like to know the culture. I am working on learning a little bit of the language. The teaching methods here are also better than in India. As is the temperature. I like the cold.”

Carlota, 21, is from Spain, and is at UiT to study economics. “It is a very different culture and a very beautiful country. When I saw pictures from Norway, I wanted to come and see the whole country for myself! I hope I get to know some Norwegian students.”

Ada, 20 years old, is also from Spain. She is here to study law. “I came to Tromsø because it is so different from Spain and because I wanted to practice my English. Everyone here speaks English really well.”

Themdinkosi is 26 years old and from Zimbabwe, and at UiT to study peace and conflict transformation. “Studying abroad was a difficult decision to make, but I was given a scholarship and was financed to come here to Norway. I chose Tromsø because it was the most northern part of Norway, and far from home. So far it seems like a good place. Good vibes.”

People slowly begin to return from the mountains, and it is time to start up the barbecue. Despite the rain and low temperature, the hike has been a success, and we leave to allow them a well-deserved rest at Grøtfjord.
