Hear stories about winter trapping and expeditions to the Arctic

Tromsø has been the North Norwegian capital of sealing. Following its establishment as the “Gateway to the Arctic” in the late 19th century, Tromsø became a key as a base for many polar expeditions. The Polar Museum preserves and conveys stories related to this aspect of the history of Tromsø and the Arctic.

The Polar Museum opened in 1978 in connection with the 50th anniversary of Roald Amundsen’s fateful flight in the flying boat Latham. The Polar Museum is now one of the four exhibition venues that constitute the Tromsø University Museum.

The Polar Museum’s permanent exhibitions deal with sealing, overwintering trapping, the stories of famous trappers such as Henry Rudi and Wanny Wolstad, the expeditions of Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen and the cultural history of Svalbard.
