Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 December for the spring semester and 1 June for the autumn semester.

Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.


Type of course

This course may be taken as a single course. A good command of oral and written English is recommended.

Higher Education Entrance Qualification (generell studiekompetanse) or prior learning and work experience (realkompetanse).

Course content

The main focus in this course is to develop the students' skills and proficiency in general and professional English to enable them to communicate clearly, correctly and effectively in professional contexts.

Objectives of the course

The students have the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

The student:

  • knows correct English usage in different contexts
  • knows specific terminology and expressions in business and other specialist fields
  • has knowledge of formal aspects of various written types of document
  • is able to discuss and present theoretical and professional topics from various business context.

Skills

The student:

  • has improved his/hers written English
  • is able to write different types of business texts in English
  • has acquired more vocabulary and some specific terminology
  • is able to present and discuss the knowledge he/she has acquired in good spoken and written English.


Language of instruction and examination

Language of instruction and examination: English.

Teaching methods

The course will be taught two hours per week for 13 weeks and will consist of lectures, seminars, exercises, language/grammar work and discussions.

Quality assurance: The course undergoes a midterm evaluation or an end-of-term evaluation every third year.


Assessment

The following coursework requirements must be completed and approved in order to take the final exam:

Coursework requirements: Two written assignments/exercises + one oral presentation (10 min). The work requirements are assessed as approved/not approved.

Assessment method: A written 4-hour (digital) school exam (in WISEflow).

Performance in the course will be assessed on an A-F grades scale. Grades are A-E for passed and F for failed. A re-sit examination is offered in the event of an F grade. The deadline to register for a re-sit examination (in the Studentweb) is January 15th for the autumn semester and August 15th for the spring semester.
