autumn 2018 STV-2003 The European Union (EU): Institutions and Politics - 10 ECTS

Application deadline

Applicants from the Nordic countries: June 1st for the autumn semester and December 1st for the spring semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: October 1st for the spring semester, April 15th for the autumn semester.

Type of course

The course is optional and can be taken as one of the courses required at the 2000-level as part of a BA in Political Science. It can also be taken to fulfil the course requirements of other BA-programs within the Social Sciences, Law, Fisheries and Humanities.

Admission requirements

Nordic applicants: generell studiekompetanse eller realkompetanse. International applicants: Higher Education Entrance Qualifications and certified language requirements in English. A list of the requirements for the Higher Education Entrance Qualification in Norway can be found on the website of the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT). As for the language requirements we refer to NOKUT¿s GSU-list.

Course content

The course gives an introduction to the European Union, emphasizing its particular (and unique) characteristics as a political system and international organisation, including its historical roots and development, its formal institutions as well as its decision-making procedures and processes. How can the development of the EU be described and explained? Which are the key institutions of the union, how do they work and what are their respective powers and responsibilities?

Objectives of the course

Objective of the course: Having completed the course students should have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge and comprehension: Students should have acquired knowledge about:

  • The historical development, the formal institutions and the decision-making procedures and processes of the EU
  • Theoretical approaches to the study of the EU as a political system

Skills: Students should be able to:

  • Make use of scholarly knowledge to work independently on problems and issues pertaining to the EU as a political system and a fairly unique form of international cooperation
  • Apply theoretical concepts and ideas to new areas
  • Give an account of theoretical approaches to the study of the EU ¿ its development, politics and institutions

 

Competence:

  • Students should be able to independently extend their competence and expertise and discuss issues, problems and observations pertaining to the scholarly study of the European Union. They should be able to do this both in an academic and public or general setting.

Language of instruction and examination

English. Note, however, that all exam-work can be submitted in either English or Norwegian.

Teaching methods

Lectures (10 x 2 hours, 20 hours in total)

Assessment

6-hour school exam. The grade scale goes from A (top score) to F (fail). In case of fail or `lawful absence¿, a re-sit exam will be arranged at the beginning of the following term.
