Admission requirements

PhD students or holders of a Norwegian master´s degree of five years or 3+ 2 years (or equivalent) in peace studies, or other relevant diciplines within the social sciences, humanitites or law may be admitted. PhD students must upload a document from their university stating that there are registered PhD students. This group of applicants does not have to prove English proficiency and are exempt from semester fee.

Holders of a Master´s degree must upload a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. Applicants from listed countries must document proficiency in English. The course has 15 seats. Applicants will be divided into 4 categories:

Category 1: People admitted to the PhD programme at UiT

Category 2: Participants in the Associate Professor programme that fulfil the educational requirements

Category 3: Doctoral students from other universities

Category 4: People with a minimum of a Master´ss degree (or equivalent). (A Norwegian master´s degree of 5 years or 3 (bachelor degree) + 2 years (masters degree).


Course content

The field course will be applied upon the event of intensive courses held by the CPS - Centre for Peace Studies in collaboration with partner institutions and/or units. It is to secure the quality of the contents through a formalization of requirements, and to secure the accountability of the participants and their contributions.

Peace Studies is internationally oriented and interdisciplinary in character. Through offering credited field courses, participating candidates will gain valuable experience in meeting scholars and peers in complex international settings, where they can discuss and relate their projects to topical issues.


Objectives of the course

The candidates will gain the following learning outcomes:

 

Knowledge

  • an overview of the current topical and theoretical debates
  • deeper insights into different methods and theoretical aspects concerning the topic in question

Skills

  • ability to reflect on complex academic topical problems
  • ability to contribute to the development of related theoretical perspectives

Competence

  • ability to write an advanced academic text on the topical issue
  • ability to take active part in academic discussions and to contribute with constructive feedback/peer review

Teaching methods

One week intensive course:

  • Lectures, 10 hours
  • Seminars, including student/candidate presentations and peer reviews, 10 hours
  • Excursion, 1 day

Individual reading of set curriculum pre-course and submission of topical individual paper post-course.


Assessment

The exam will consist of:

 

Paper of 6-7 pages, TNR pt 12, 1,5 spacing, to be submitted by set deadline after the course.

 

The exam will be assessed on a Pass/Fail basis.

500 pages, whereof 150 self-selected (to be approved upon exam evaluation)
