Admission requirements

PhD students or holders of a Norwegian master´s degree of five years or 3+ 2 years (or equivalent) may be admitted.

The course has 10 seats. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, applicants will be ranked in this order:

1. PhD students at UiT

2. Participants in the Associate Professor programme at UiT (must hold a Master´s  degree)

3. Registered PhD students from other universities

4. Applicants documenting that they have a Norwegian Master´s degree (or equivalent)

The course will be cancelled if less than four participants.

PhD students at UiT register for the course through StudentWeb. The registration for spring semester starts in the middle of December.

Other applicants apply for admission through SøknadsWeb. Application code 9304.

Non-UiT PhD students must upload a document from their university stating that they are registered PhD students. This group of applicants does not have to prove English proficiency and are exempt from semester fee.

Holders of a Master´s degree must upload a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. Applicants from listed countries must document proficiency in English. To find out if this applies to you, see the following list:

Course overlap

If you pass the examination in this course, you will get an reduction in credits (as stated below), if you previously have passed the following courses:

HEL-8023 Genomics in Clinical and Biomedical Research 4 stp

Course content

Practical examples will be taken from plant genomics, but the course is suitable for biologists in all fields. Topics of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics will be covered. The course will concentrate on data mining and the use of bioinformatics for the analysis of genes and proteins.

Students will work web-based for the course to perform computer based tasks and prepare a seminar talk on one of the subjects.


Objectives of the course

A web-based course aimed to give PhD students theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of functional genomics.

Language of instruction and examination

The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.

Teaching methods

4 h lecture. 5 h seminars. 18 h computer work (Web-based).

Assessment

Oral seminar presentation and participation in group discussions. Grade: Pass/fail.

The curriculum for this course will be a collection of selected primary literature which will be available on the web.
