Structuring and documenting your research data

In their meeting on March 9 2017, the University Board at UiT adopted Principles and guidelines for research data management at UiT, effective as of September 1 the same year. The purpose of these is to "clarify responsibility and provide guidance on how the institution and its employees shall manage, share and archive research data in line with the institution's administrative, financial, and ethical guidelines." Read more about the policy here (in Norwegian only).

A good structure and documentation of research data are essential both for your own work, and for the sharing of your data. When you collect data, it might be that you primarily focus on the collection procedure, at the expense of structuring and documentation of the data. This might make it more difficult to investigate your data later, and in the worst case, you must redo the data collection. If you plan to share your data, there are particular demands on good structure and documentation in order for others to be able to understand and (re)use the data correctly.

In this course, we offfer advice on how to structure and document research data in a good way from the start of the collection, and what aspects you should be especially aware of when sharing them.

The University Library offers a variety of courses on research data this fall. For a complete overview, go here.
