Economic Analysis of Marine Protected Area: Bioeconomic Modeling and Valuation Approaches

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are often established for conservation objectives. However, benefits provided by MPAs exceed pure biodiversity conservation as they may include other social and economic benefits to local communities.

And though it is debated, MPAs may provide a management tool for sustainable fisheries and/or solving conflicts of interests between users of marine resources. It is of value to understand how implementation of an MPA can give different benefits to the economy and society. This thesis attempts to analyze some of the economic effects as well as economic values of MPAs in specific situations. First it is described how an MPA can be used as a management tool to solve economic conflicts between ocean users (i.e. fishers and fish farmers), using an integrated bioeconomic model with an MPA.

Secondly we analyze the benefits obtained from MPA-based tourism activities, which are derived using a discrete choice experiment (DCE) survey.

Finally, optimal management of the coexistence of fisheries and tourism activities supported by an MPA is analyzed and discussed. The results show that implementation of an MPA is sound policy from both biological and economic perspectives.
