PhD students in science at UiTgo directly to Studentweb to register for class and exam. Others need to apply, and be granted admission prior to register for class and exam.


Type of course

The course is included in the program Phd in Science. The course is also available as a singular course.

Admission requirements

PhD students or holders of a Norwegian master´s degree in Sceince of five years or 3 + 2 years (or equivalent) may be admitted. In your educational background you need mathematical courses of at least 80 ECTS credits which includes a course in the mathematical modeling of linear continous systems. A course which covers both analytical and numerical methods and an introdction to the numerical soulution of partial differential equations.

PhD students from other universities must upload a document from their home institution stating that there are registered PhD students. This group of applicants does not have to prove English proficiency and are exempt from semester fee.

Holders of a Master´s degree must upload a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. Applicants from listed countries must document proficiency in English.

All external applicants have to attach a confirmation of their status as a PhD student from their home institution.
Students who hold a Master of Science degree, but are not yet enrolled as a PhD-student have to attach a copy of their master's degree diploma. These students are also required to pay the semester fee.

Course content

An introduction to basic concepts of the theory of nonlinear waves. Covers variational formulations, perturbation methods, amplitude equations, integrable models and the theory of shocks. Numerical simulations play a central role in the modeling of nonlinear wave phenomena.

Oral presentations will be required.


Objectives of the course

After completing the course the students should know basic theory for modeling of linear and non-linear continuum systems, including:
  • hyperbolic and dispersive continuum models.
  • stability theory for conservative and dissipative models.
  • basic perturbation theory for models with several space-time scales.
  • numerical modelling of continuum models.
  • be able to use both analytical and numerical solution methods.

Language of instruction and examination

The language of instruction and the syllabus is English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.

Lectures: 40 h
Coursework: 30 h

Assessment

One oral exam counting 100%.

Assessment scale: Letter grades A-F.

Coursework requirements
Oral presentation and mandatory homework sets. A passing grade is required on the mandatory homework sets for permission to take the exam.
