If you pass the examination in this course, you will get an reduction in credits (as stated below), if you previously have passed the following courses:

GEO-8113 Field course in Exogene Geology 5 stp

Course content

The course provides field experience in interpreting Quaternary and ancient depositional environments based on mapping and studies of sedimentary sections and geophysical profiles (seismics, GPR). The first part of the course is based at the University of Tromsø's field station at Skibotn where sediment petrographic studies and a Quaternary mapping exercise are used to interpret the history of deglaciation, valley-filling and sea-level change. The second part takes place in Eastern Finnmark where modern and postglacial, fluviodeltaic and regressive, coastal systems at Tana and Sandfjorden are used to demonstrate the relationship among depositional process, morphology and architecture. The field course concludes with a study of ancient analogues in the Precambian sedimentary rocks on the northern side of Varangerfjorden.

Recommended prerequisites

GEO-2003 Quaternary geology, GEO-2005 Sedimentology, GEO-2006 Introduction to applied geophysics, GEO-2007 Historical geology / Stratigraphy

Objectives of the course

This course aims to give field-based experience in sedimentological, Quaternary geological and stratigraphic interpretation, and to provide an understanding of how depositional processes and other factors determine sedimentary facies and basin-fill architecture.

Language of instruction and examination

English

Teaching methods

10 days field study (in late June).

Before the field course, each student will be expected to submit (by May 1) a short report on a selected topic.

Field work and the final reports will be based on group collaboration.

Assessment

Field reports.

Grading scale: Pass/fail.

Students who do not pass the examination will have the opportunity to hand in revised reports.

Recommended reading/syllabus

Available from teacher on request.
