The number of participants is strictly limited. Prospect students should submit a brief CV and outline a proposed Essay-work to Jørgen Schou Christiansen no later than 1 June 2017.

The course requires active and practical participation in the TUNU-Expedition.

Admission requirements

In order to apply for this course you must be registered as a PhD student at a university. Valid documentation is a statement from your institution that you are a registered PhD student this academic year (this may be a screenshot from your page in Studentweb if you are enrolled at a Norwegian university).

Maximum 3 participants.

If more than 3 applicants, priority will be given as follows:

  • Participants admitted to the PhD programme at UiT
  • Participants in the Associate Professor programme (Førstelektorprogrammet)
  • PhD candidates from other universities

Course content

The course runs every second year and is held on board RV Helmer Hanssen on a two-weeks cruise to Northeast Greenland 70-78 °N (August-September). The course gives an introduction to Arctic marine biodiversity and ecology with particular emphasis on fishes and zoobenthos. The course is dependent on the availability of the vessel. In 2017 the course is 14 - 26 September.


Objectives of the course

The course gives first-hand insight to the biodiversity and ecophysiology of arctic fishes in light of climate change.

English

Teaching methods

Topical lectures by senior scientists are given on board. The PhD-student is expected to orally present an outline of the essay on board and submit a written essay after the expedition.

Assessment

Individual cruise reports (10-20 pages) mandatory after each cruise. Grade: Pass/fail.
