The Italian Ambassador impressed by seminar from professor at UiT
- This seminar is yet another result of the excellent cooperation between the Arctic University and the Italian Embassy, says the Italian Ambassador to Norway, Giorgio Novello.
Two mediterranean seas
He describes the seminar «Two mediterranean seas: contrasts and similarities», where Paul Wassmann, professor in Arctic and Marine biology at UiT presented how also the Arctic Ocean can be called a mediterranean one.
Ambassador Novello visited Tromsø on the 9. of September, as part of the Italian Embassy’s roadshow through Norway. The roadshow “Under the Sign of Excellence” focuses on the cooperation between Italy and Norway.
- Professor Wassmann offered a detailed, scientifically sound presentation of the reasons why a comparison between the “icy Arctic” and the “warm Mediterranean” can be instrumental in devising science, research, economic and political strategies, Ambassador Giorgio Novello continues.
International cooperation
Professor Paul Wassmann has worked on the Artic region for many years, especially on Arctic marine system ecology.
- We appreciate that the Italian Ambassador paid his visit to learn more about the research and the cooperation that exist between Italy and Tromsø, says professor Paul Wassmann.
- Italy are already doing research on the Arctic, and they are more than welcome to work with UiT in the Arctic Ocean and its proximity, professor Wassmann continues.
The need for international research cooperation was highlighted by professor Wassmann.
- He [Professor Wassmann] elaborated in particular on marine biology aspects, climate change and the need for increased international science cooperation, Ambassador Giorgio Novello finishes.
Later this autumn, Paul Wassmann will hold a seminar in the Italian Embassy in Oslo, Norway, on similar topics, which may lay ground for further cooperation on the field of Arctic research between Norway and Italy.
