spring 2016 BIO-3950 Master's Thesis Biology - 60 ECTS

Type of course

This course can not be taken as a singular course.

Course content

The master thesis is an independent scientific work, under the guidance by one or several supervisors which comprises part of the Master's degree examination and which should show independent understanding, reflection and maturity.

The work should be featured by research, the thesis ought to have elements of new knowledge or new methods. The thesis should be based on literature studies, data from field work, laboratory experiments or a combination of these elements.

Students who are admitted to the master's degree normally select a project during the first semester, and no later than one month before the end of the second semester.  For students associated within a research project, the supervisor and the student must ensure that it is being written a supervisor contract. In many research projects it is assumed that the project manager or one or more project partners are the owners of the project results and has exclusive rights to exploit them. This particularly applies to research projects that are externally funded. All students will fill out a supervision contract in consultations with their supervisor. The contract has to be approved by the Department.

Dead line for handing in the contract is during the third semester for all students;

  • 1. September for students admitted in autumn.
  • 1. February for students admitted in spring.

Objectives of the course

The aim with the thesis is to provide an individual and deeper understanding in an important disipline during the study program.

Individual work under instructon from supervisors.

Assessment

Evaluation consist of a master thesis and an oral examination. The assessment is evaluated by a graded scale of five marks from A to E for pass and F for fail.

Candidates should normally have passed all other subjects before the delivery of final thesis.

After the master's thesis is submitted and approved, there will be an oral master's examination. This examination consists of a public presentation at minimum 30 minutes where the student provides an overview of the project.
Examination Commission consists of at least one external examiner and an internal examiner.

Sensors should be present at the public presentation. Then follows an oral examination with the examination commission.


Deadline for submission of Master's thesis  is May 15th for students admitted in autumn, November 15th for students admitted in spring.

The master's thesis must be submitted in PDF format, the submission is done electronically in Munin.
