Energy balance and temperature regulation
A key feature of high latitude animals is the various mechanisms by which they can maintain strict economy with energy and - for marine mammals in particular - with water. Several of our research initiatives address this issue. We, thus, continue to study fundamental mechanisms underlying energy-efficient locomotion in reindeer and ptarmigans, in collaboration with University of Manchester. We also currently investigate the efficiency of heat exchange mechanisms in birds and mammals, in collaboration with NTNU, and of water conservation in pinnipeds.
