New article "The Polar Silk Road and the future governance of the Northern Sea Route"
Jan Solski, postdoc at NCLOS has coauthored an article on Russian and Chinese approaches to the law of the sea. By comparing the coastal State practice of China and Russia, Solski and Nengye Liu tease out the legal implications of the Polar Silk Road for the future of the Northern Sea Route. The article is published as open access in the Leiden Journal of International Law!

“The Northern Sea Route: Between international law, national interests, and geopolitics” is the title of the most recent special issue of The Polar Journal, December 2020. The special issue, edited by Jan Solski and Tore Henriksen, consists of nine articles addressing different aspects of the political situation, economic prospects, and the legal status of the Northern Sea Route (NSR). The contributions, a product of our successful international and interdisciplinary collaboration, take a fresh snapshot of the different processes and drivers shaping the governance of Arctic shipping.

Welcome to the lecture series «Theorizing Law of the Sea in Context”. Under this series, NLCOS intends to explore law of the sea in context, with a strong emphasis on theory and methodology, in order to contribute to enriching law of the sea scholarship and presenting multiple and novel perspectives. The series will include lectures, seminars, interviews or other ad hoc academic formats that will be either entirely digital in form, or will be digitalized, and published for on demand fruition at any time.

"The Application of Teachings by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea" Sondre Torp Helmersen has contributed to a post on the NCLOS blog, describing how the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) applies the ‘teachings of the most highly qualified publicists’ (as the ICJ Statute Article 38 puts it) when deciding cases. The post builds on an article published in the Journal of International Dispute Settlement. The article undertakes an empirical analysis of the ITLOS’ judicial methodology, and is the first such analysis of the Tribunal. Findings include Judge Laing being the heaviest user of teachings in the Tribunal, and the Virginia Commentary being the most popular book.

Workshop: From research to practice - how to reduce plastic pollution in the Arctic
SALT Lofoten, KG Jebsen Center for the Law of the Sea, Norut and the research project “Marine Plastic Pollution in the Arctic” are organizing a half-day workshop on how to reduce plastic pollution in the Arctic. The workshop will take place on Monday 21st of January from 12.00 to 16.30 at Scandic Ishavshotel (Fredrik Langnes gate 2, Tromsø). We invite decision makers in key industries in the Arctic, policy makers, managers and scientists to an introduction session on recent research on plastic pollution in the region. Through the following discussions we aim to identify solutions, key knowledge gaps and barriers to reducing the level of marine litter in the European Arctic.

Arctic Frontiers 2019 side event: Implications of a BBNJ Treaty for the Arctic
JCLOS is proud to be hosting a side event at Arctic Frontiers on 24 January 2019 in Tromsø, Norway. The Arctic is undergoing profound change, causing near irreversible modifications to the fragile and vulnerable Arctic marine ecology and environment. This side event will explore the possible implications between the existing Arctic marine governance framework and the treaty that is being negotiated at the United Nations to provide for the long-term health and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in the high seas. Each speaker will discuss the possible implications through the lenses of cooperation and compatibility.

This time it is about the new international Agreement to Prevent Unregulated High Seas Fisheries in the Central Arctic Ocean. Is there a need for such an agreement, and what are it's consequences? How did Norway get rights over such large sea areas?
It wasn’t obvious in the 1970’s, that the small country Norway, would have the exclusive rights to the resources oil, gas and fish, in a marine area six times the size of our land territory. - We can thank wise politicians with knowledge about the Law of the Sea for this, said prof. Ingvild U. Jakobsen, at the large conference Agenda Nord-Norge last week. She emphasized the importance of having competence in Law of the Sea also for our future global marine challenges.

Workshop on: The International Maritime Organization and Implementation
On 6 September 2018, the K.G. Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea (JCLOS) organized a workshop on ‘The International Maritime Organization and Implementation’. The workshop enjoyed a very good attendance and commenced with presentations from two external experts: Alexander Proelß (University of Trier) and Jan de Boer (Legal Affairs Office, IMO). Subsequently, several JCLOS/UiT staff (Iva Parlov, Henrik Ringbom, Ingvild Jakobsen, Dorottya Bognar and Julia Gaunce) gave presentations on their ongoing research.

Mapping the Arctic Ocean Workshop
The JCLOS is pleased to announce it will host an interdisciplinary workshop on Mapping the Arctic Ocean on 5 June 2018, 09.00-16.00 at Àrdna, UiT. The workshop aims to bring together experts from a variety of fields to discuss the pressing issues revolving around the Arctic Ocean, from climate change’s effect on the Arctic marine environment to biological resource beyond national jurisdiction. Dr. Larry Mayer, the Director of the Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire (USA) will give the keynote for the workshop, exploring how the Arctic Ocean’s seafloor has been mapped and how these efforts tie into Law of the Sea. By bringing together a diverse group of speakers, the workshop’s goal is to explore how these different types of mapping manifest and interact with each other in the Arctic Ocean.

Technological and environmental challenges of Arctic shipping
A new publication by Akvaplan-niva AS and Marintek with JCLOS as partners in the interdisciplinary project "A-LEX: Regulating Arctic Shipping: Political, legal, technological and environmental challenges", creates a fictive case studie of the vessel Oleum's navigation in the Arctic region and evaluates its' technical and environmental challenges and effects.

Environmental Standards for Deep Seabed Mining
On 8-9 May 2015 a workshop entitled “Environmental Standards for Deep Seabed Mining” was held in Tromsø by the K.G. Jebsen Center for the Law of the Sea. The background of the workshop were the growing possibilities for the exploitation of mineral resources of the deep seabed. Professor Nele Matz-Lück and Dr Ingvild Jakobsen have now published online articles and foreword in the journal 'Marine Policy', which soon will be published in print, http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0308597X1630183X.
