BED-2140 Introduction to Tourism Management - 15 ECTS

Exchange students and Fulbright students: Higher Education Entrance Qualification and certified language requirements in English.

- The history of tourism
- Destinations and destination development
- Attractions and attraction development
- The tourism product
- Travel patterns and tourists behaviour
- Tourist demand and the tourist market
- Tourism politics and the organising of tourism
- Environmental, cultural and economical impacts of tourism on nature, humans and society
- International tourism and trends
Objectives of the course
Knowledge
After completing the course the candidate will:
- Have broad knowledge of the tourism industry and tourism as a phenomenon
- Have knowledge of the history of tourism and the factors that have led to tourism development
- Have knowledge of major destinations and the resources on which they are based
- Have knowledge of tourist markets and be able to explain various segmentation criteria
- Have knowledge of relevant research and theories within the field of tourism.
- Have broad knowledge of the basics of tourism research
Skills
After completing the course the candidate should:
- Be able to describe aspects important for destination development
- Be able to evaluate destinations by use of relevant theory
- Be able to analyze an attraction and its attraction power
- Be able to analyze the pros and cons of a destination and suggest areas for further development.
- Have the ability to apply tourism theories in order to establish the viability of destinations and attractions
- Have the ability to give examples of and discuss various possibilities and limitations related to tourism development and growth
- Be able to identify the economic impacts of tourism at a destination
General competence
After completing the course the candidate:
- Is able to evaluate the potential possibilities and challenges of tourism in a critical and analytic manner.
- Is able to debate current issues in tourism
- Have insights into potential development areas of the tourism industry
- Is able to carry out written projects reflecting on the various facets of tourism
- Is able to exchange ideas and views on the tourism industry by using relevant theories.
- Is aware some of the relevant cultural aspects related to international tourism
Assessment
Part 1: There will be a four-hour online open source exam counting for 60% of the final grade.
Part 2: The papers written during the course constitute the second half of the assessment, counting 40% of the final grade.
The final grade is based on the work assignments and the written examination.
The grading scale from A to F will be utilised whereby A is the best grade and F is failed.
