SVF-8057 Nature Tourism and Management - 5 ECTS

PhD students at UiT register for class and exam in Studentweb by 1 September in autumn semester and 1 February in spring semester.


Type of course

The course is part of the PhD study program, specialisation in tourism, at UiT The Norwegian Arctic University. The course is open for other PhD-students, and can be taken separately.   

Admission requirements

PhD students or holders of a Norwegian master´s degree of five years or 3+ 2 years (or equivalent) within the fields of tourism, hospitality, social sciences, humanities, business administration or economics may be admitted. Valid documentation is a statement from your institution that you are a registered PhD student or a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. PhD students are exempt from semester fee.

Course content

  • Interpretations of nature; historical and prevailing paradigms in conceptions of nature; bio-centric and anthropocentric approaches

 

  • Nature based tourism and commercialization of wilderness; eco tourism, sustainability and other central concepts and approaches

 

  • Tourism and nature governance; synergies and conflicts

 

  • Norwegian nature management system; everyman¿s right, the The Friluftsliv act, the nature conservation system

 

 

  • Protected areas; stakeholders and relations and dynamics - models for stakeholder and public participation in tourism management

 

  • Different types of knowledge in management of the nature-tourism nexus; accountability, responsiveness, and the precautionary principles

 

  • Trends in nature based tourism.


Objectives of the course

Students shall obtain knowledge of theories concerning a vital aspect of nature based tourism. At the end of the course, concerning knowledge, the students should:

· Be at the forefront within the academic field of nature based tourism, its epistemologies and discourses, and convenient methods in studying the field.  

· Be able to development of new knowledge, new theories, methods, interpretations and forms of documentation in the field.

 

 

At the end of the course, the student should have the following skills:

· be able to formulate problems, make a research plan and carry out research in the field of nature based tourism.

· be able to carry out research of a high international standard concerning nature based tourism.

· be able to handle complex academic issues and challenge established knowledge and practice in the field.

 

After having fulfilled the course the candidate should the competency to:  

· identify relevant ethical issues and carry out his/her research with scholarly integrity.

· manage complex interdisciplinary assignments and projects

· communicate research and development work through recognized Norwegian and international channels.

· participate in debates in regional, national and international forums.

· be able to assess the need for, initiate and practice innovations in the field.


Language of instruction and examination

The course is taught in English. The essay should be written in English or a Scandinavian language.

Teaching methods

This is a 2,5 days course, but requires literature studies beforehand in order to prepare for the theoretical underpinnings of the topic. The course consists of lectures and seminar discussions, and after the course sessions, students are required to write an analytical essay. The topics of the essays will be discussed during the course.

All courses will be evaluated once through the program period. The program board decides which courses are to be evaluated by students and teacher each year.


Assessment

The course sessions are compulsory and the students are expected to take part in discussions, and to present the outline for their essay.

 

 

Students must produce an argumentative essay of about 5000 words. The students shall produce a draft or synopsis that will be discussed during the course. The essay should be finalised within five weeks after the course sessions have ended.

 

The exam will be assessed on a Pass/Fail basis.

 

A paper not accepted (fail) can be submitted.
