REI-3501 Graduate Field Course: Northern Tourism in Practice - 10 ECTS

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have a Bachelor`s Degree in tourism, social science, humanities or science, or a Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. Maximum number of participants is 40.

Course content

In the course, students will plan, conduct and report on a project where students and teachers gather in a tourist destination in the north. Knowledge will be applied through seminars, fieldwork, presentations to stakeholders and reporting in ways that further thesis work and tourism research in general.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge:

Tourism situation at the chosen destination, including the historical development of tourism there and its cultural, industrial, social, political and natural implications.

The stakeholders and networks engaged in tourism development in the north and their role for future prospects.

Skills:

Identifying research themes relevant and data needs and potentials for tourism research in the chosen area.

Designing and conducting small-scale research project.

Conducting information and data collecting relevant to the topics of the course and the chosen destination.

Assessing the tourist experience potential of the natural and cultural resources of an area.

General competence

Critically reflection on research ethics in the north.

Presenting and discussing study and case material in field seminars.

Cooperating and networking with international students in the fiel.

Reporting results of a research project.

Seminars and lectures, fieldwork, student presentations and group work

Assessment

The final assessment is an individual paper.

Grading scale: A - F, with F for failed.

A re-sit exam will be arranged for this course.
