Stig Mathisen, D.M.A. holds a Doctorate and a Masters Degree in Studio/Jazz Guitar from University of Southern California, and he has 6 years of classical training from UiT, Musikkonservatoriet (UMAK) in Tromsø. He was a faculty member at UiT from 1998-2006, teaching studio technology, and was a T.A. at University of Southern California from 2007-2011. After being employed as a guitar instructor at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California in 2011, Stig was promoted to Chair of the Guitar Program (GIT) in 2012, a position he held until he resigned in October 2019. Stig has authored several books that are currently in use as core curriculum at Musicians Institute.

As a musician Stig has worked professionally in many musical styles and with numerous international musicians. Stig has done collaborative masterclasses with Joe Satriani and Scott Henderson, and he has been a featured clinic holder at guitar events alongside Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, Guthrie Govan, Tosin Abasi, Zakk Wylde, and many other world class guitarists. In 2015-2018, Stig collaborated with Scott Henderson and Oz Noy on developing first online courses for MI, focusing on their playing styles and musical philosophies.

As an author, Stig has written 3 books (approximately 500 pages), and been a co-author on 8 books. These books are published through WBH Musicworks.
