The course is administrated by
Institutt for geovitenskap
Type of course
Theoretical and practical subject.
Course overlap
GEO-3103 Geochemical Thermodynamics 2 stp
Course contents
The course gives an introduction to a selection of geochemical topics. The first part of the course discusses how the Earth can be regarded as a chemical and physical system. Then, it will be given an introduction to how the thermodynamic laws can be used for quantification of geological processes. It will be demonstrated how the chemical compositions of minerals in equilibrium can be used to calculate the temperature and pressure during mineral formation. A short discussion on aqueous solutions is also given. Further, the course discuss how soil formation, diagenesis, metamorphism an ore formation is controlled by chemical reactions. The course also focuses on isotope geochemistry; both radioactive and stable isotope geochemistry will be addressed. The last part of the course gives an introduction to organic geochemistry.
Objective of the course
The purpose of the course is to give the student an understanding of the fundamentals and the approaches for doing modern geochemical analysis.
