Recomended prerequisites:

Basic knowledge from HEL-8012 (Introductory course in quantitative methods) or an equivalent course at a graduate level (PhD level) from another university.

Course content

The course will address quantitative research and problems related to core thinking, characterizing and diagnosing, treatment/prevention and health services within psychiatric healthcare.

The course will be carried out as four seminars (two in the autumn and two in the spring) where the theme will be (a) diagnosis and psychometrics, including a transcultural perspective, (b) research in treatment (effect- and efficacy research), (c) translation research, (d) implementation research and user effects.

As part of professional development the student shall present a draft on an article, or part of an article from their own project (trial defense) and be an opponent to another person¿s research. The student shall submit their written contribution before the meeting


Objectives of the course

After course completion the participants should be able to:
  • Recognize and be able to evaluate the purpose of various methods and designs that are employed within research in mental health.
  • Establish which research questions can be evaluated by which research methods.
  • Have knowledge about, and be able to design quantitative clinical studies, including effectiveness studies and efficacy studies.
  • Have knowledge about implementing clinical interventions and in relation to research.
  • Identify ethical and practical problems related to research in vulnerable groups.

Teaching methods

Lectures, group supervision and group work/seminars.

Assessment

Assigments:

Obligatory attendance to at least 3 of 4 meetings. Active participation during a trial defense and being an opponent of at least one person's trial defense.

Examination and evaluation:

Oral presentation of a project plan and a written submission of handouts.

Approved trial defense

Continuous examination:

In the event of not having completed (pass) requirements during the usual study period, an opportunity to meet the (pass) requirements will be given in the subsequent semesters through submission and participation.
