TLM-3010 Telemedicine Applications - 10 ECTS

Type of course

Theoretical and practical. The subject can be taken as a singular course as long as the admission requirement for the Master Program is satisfied.

Admission requirements

Bachelor Degree in Health related disciplines.

Course content

The course will cover the following topics: 1) Definitions of 'telemedicine' and 'telemedical applications'. 2) An overview of types of telemedicine. 3) An overview of telemedical applications in routine use in the Norwegian health system and in Helse Nord. 4) Telemedicine applications in psychiatry, including videoconferencing. 5) Promoters of telemedicine. 6) Characteristics of successfully implemented telemedical applications. 7) Finding information about telemedicine, online and offline resources. 8) Use of central research databases. The course is a central part of the Master's programme and introduces the students to telemedicine.

Objectives of the course

Learning Outcomes: Following the course, the students should be able to: 1) Define 'telemedicine' and 'telemedical applications'. 2) Give an overview of types of telemedicine. 3) Describe the main types of telemedical applications in current use in the Norwegian health system. 4) Share first-hand experience regarding some telemedical application. 5) Discuss telemedical applications in psychiatry. 6) Identify potential gains and challenges related to the implementation of telemedicine and e-health. 7) Discuss the conditions for successfully implementing telemedicine and e-health services. 8) Find information about telemedicine and use central research databases.

Language of instruction and examination

English.

Teaching methods

The course consists of a combination of lectures, discussions, homework, practical exercises and demonstrations of telemedical applications. In addition to physical attendance of lectures and seminars, part of the course is net-based that requires active participation of students via Fronter. All assignments are submitted electronically in Fronter.

Assessment

2-weeks' take-home examination based on a specific assignment. Norwegian grading system: A-E, with F as fail. Evaluation: Course evaluation is conducted by both students and the lecturer at the end of the course.
