The Faculty of Law was founded in 1987 and is the most recent addition to the University of Tromsø. Its popularity resulted in restricted admission from 1990. The Faculty is authorized to grant Master of law (5 years), LL.M. in Law of the Sea and Doctorates in Law. Since the autumn 1989, when the first candidates received their degrees, and up to the autumn 2003, 725 candidates have graduated from the University of Tromsø. In addition, the Faculty has arranged seven doctoral dissertations.

The Faculty of Law has research areas within private and public law, among others law of property rights and obligation, child law, social security law, criminal law, legal proceedings, law of inheritance and succession and legal philosophy.

Today, the academic staff consist of 38 people, while the administrative staff consist of 19.
