Objectives:
The aim of this module is to present an overview and an understanding of how content-based information retrieval operations, work.
Content:
The module covers content-based operations such as indexing, retrieval, filtering, summarisation, and information extraction and is applied to text, image, spoken audio and digital video. Principal focus is on Information Retrieval from text documents with a detailed discussion on the nature and operation of WWW search engines. Particular importance will be allocated to the problem of testing and evaluation of information retrieval systems.
Coursework requirements:
Includes up to 2 written mandatory assignments. Approved assignments give access to the final exam. Oral presentation of the assignments and demonstration of a working system can be claimed.
Exam and assessment:
Oral exam (100%). Grade will be given by letter A-F.
Form of teaching:
Lectures: 20 hours, Colloquium / seminars: 12 hours. Laboratory work is included in the module.
The course will be taught over three sittings in November, December and in early 2008. The division of the course is as follows:
- Sitting 1 : Tuesday 13th November 2007 (4 hours)
- Sitting 2 : Monday 17th & Tuesday 18th December 2007 (6 hours)
- Sitting 3 : Dates TBA, most likely February 2008 (10 hours)
