The Fulbright Arctic Chair is one of the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs programs; these awards are among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholarship Program. The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples, James Anaya, warned Friday that a proposal to repeal key laws and policies related to Sami people in Norway could “constitute an enormous setback for the recognition and protection of human rights in the country.” The Sami are an indigenous people living in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.
There are more than 370 million indigenous peoples in some 90 countries in the world today, accounting for 15 percent of the world’s poor and one-third of the 900 million people living in extreme poverty. Indigenous people tend to experience low levels of education, increased health problems, higher crime rates and human rights abuses.
In an article published in Universitetsavisa.no, head of the Department of Academic affairs- International Office, Astrid Revhaug at the University of Tromsø shows concern about the increasing use of education agents in connection with application to English taught courses and programs at the University of Tromsø.
