Open workshop in Alta April 28, 2015

Hosted by the Department of Tourism and Northern Studies of the Faculty of Finnmark the research programme “Making Sense of the Aurora” will organise an open workshop in Alta on April 28, 2015. This research programme is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of Northern Light in its cultural and scientific context. It was constituted a few years back and is led by Professor Robert Marc Friedman at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History of Oslo University. It is funded by Nordforsk and the Trond Mohn endowment, Tromsø Forskningsstiftelse.

The attached flyer gives a brief presentation of its general scope and list its current participants and some of its subprojects.

The group is happy to hold its next workshop on Tuesday April 28 2015 in Alta as an open event joined by several of the eminent experts on winter tourism and outdoor recreation who are active at the Finnmark Faculty.

All interested persons are welcome to apply to attend, either with a short presentation of their own of relevance to our theme, or to sit in on the discussions.  Participation is free of charge but limited for practical reasons. Please apply to Urban Wråkberg or Stein Roar Mathisen at the Department for Tourism Research and Northern Studies.

The research subprojects now pursued in this programme are relevant in various ways to northern tourism, to museum communication and our understanding of traditional knowledge of the auroræ, as well as for improving our knowledge on the socio-economic and geopolitical role of the modern physics of this phenomenon.

The programme is forthcoming.

The workshop is now fully-booked.
