Theoretical

The course is divided into nine sub-topics, such as: 1) Historically overview over the health status of the Sami people. Introduction to the organization of the Norway health care system and the establishment of Sami health services. 2) Culture, health and ethnomedicine. 3) Stigma and living conditions for the Sami people in the north of Norway. 4) Users perspective in health service for Sami patients. 5) Sami patients - to see, to understand and to help. 6) When two modes of perception interact. 7) Mental health among Sami adolescents. 8) Indigenous people and somatic health. 9) Traditional Sami medicine. 10) Guest lecture

This course will give an introduction to different health issues related to indigenous people Arctic in general and Sami people particularly.

English

Teaching will be organized through lectures and seminars. Arranged by the Centre of Sami Health Research, Institute of Community Medicine. Approximately 25-30 hours in sum; two-three hours pr sub-topics.

Home assignment: One essay of approx. 12 pages (font 12:Times New Roman and spacing 1,5) based on a given topic. Exam will be graded on an A to F scale.
