GEO-3144 Marine geology and geophysics cruise - 5 stp
Admission requirements
PhD-students have priority for this course (code GEO-8144), secondly UiT master students. Exchange students are not admitted for this course.
Course contents
The course is based on cruises with R/V "Helmer Hanssen" in the waters of Svalbard, the Fram Strait and the Arctic Ocean. International research topics of current interest and research questions relevant to AMGG will be studied in groups. The course will cover the following topics: ocean water masses including sea-ice melting, sea-ice build up and brine formation; the dynamics of the ocean floor and its subsurface; fluid flow escape features; marine geohazards, modern and fossil ecosystems; paleoceanography, paleoclimate and glacial history.
Objective of the course
The course provides detailed interdisciplinary Arctic margin research training.
Assessment
Individual cruise report (10-20 pages) after each cruise. Grading: pass/fail.
Each student must participate in one cruise and submit one individual report.
