Programme description
The two-year Master's program in Telemedicine and E-health provides insight into the design, application and implementation of modern technology to public healthcare services.
The Master's program is a collaboration between the University of Tromsø and the Norwegian Centre for Integrated Care and Telemedicine (NST), which is internationally recognized for its expertise in telemedicine and e-health. Students will have the opportunities to develop professional cooperation with the Centre (NST). As one of the most internationally renowned Telemedicine research centres in the world, the Norwegian Centre for Integrated Care and Telemedicine offers a stimulating research and learning environment for students in the Master's program.
During the first year, students are required to finish all the mandatory courses. Both the theoretical and methodological dimensions of the program will be covered. The second year focuses mainly on the student's individual research project and the write-up of the Master's Thesis.

Learning outcomes
For each programme at the University of Tromsø there are set targets for knowledge, analytical understanding, skills and competences that a student should have reached by the end of the studies.
Learning Outcomes:
The candidates should be able to:
- Describe the main types of telemedical applications in current use in the Norwegian health system as well as identify the primary actors;
- Understand how technology and e-health services can be exploited strategically to create new ways of working together;
- Contribute in the design, implementation and use of telemedicine and e-health systems;
- Promote and introduce telemedicine and e-health services and programs;
- Identify the conditions for successfully implementing telemedicine and e-health services;
- Apply telemedicine and e-health services in professional health work;
- The Master's program will also qualify graduates for researcher education in telemedicine and e-health.
The students will acquire:
Knowledge and analytical understanding to:
- Design and implement modern technology in medical practices;
- Construct e-health processes, systems and strategies.
Skills and competences:
- Relate theoretical and methodological frameworks to telemedicine and e-health processes;
- Develop communication skills through active participation in group discussions, team work and presentations;
- Design and carry out a research project that involves the use of evidence-based data collection.
Admission requirements
Admission to the Master's program in Telemedicine and E-health requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in:
- Health-related professional studies (for the "Health" stream such as Medicine, Nursing, and Physiotheraphy), OR
- Computer sciences (for the "Technology" stream. Students must be proficient in core computer science topics and have good programming skills).
Proficiency in English:
Students are expected to fulfill the English entrance requirements for Master's applications stated by the University.
Application deadlines:
The application deadline for Quota applicants and other international self-financing applicants: December 1st.
The application deadline for Norwegian and other Nordic applicants: April 15th.
Teaching and assessment
Teaching and assessment methods are described in the course plan for each course.
Teaching:
Teaching methods consist of a combination of regular and compact lectures, where the students should attend physically on campus and also net-based lectures, exercises and assignments.
Assessment:
Various assessment forms are used including group presentations, project reports, experimental and laboratorial assignments.
The Norwegian grading system is applied: A-E (pass), with F as fail.
