Information for Foreign Staff and Academics
Teacher exchange
Teacher exchange plays an important part in international bilateral cooperation. Most of the teacher exchanges with the University of Tromsø take place within the framework of the scholarship programmes; Erasmus,Nordplus and Barentsplus. The exchanges under these programmes are based on bilateral agreements (Nordplus on disciplinary networks). Teacher exchange may also take place solely on the basis of bilateral agreements without the support from international scholarship programmes.
Academic staff who would like to teach, usually for a week or two, at a partner institution should contact their home institution for more information. If there is an interest but no formal cooperation exists, an exchange cooperation agreement must first be established.
The Institutional Erasmus Coordinator at the home institution can assist in establishing an Erasmus agreement. The University of Tromsø has more than one hundred cooperation agreements which include student and teacher exchange. To find out if your university is on our partner list, you can look up our partner university list.
As an exchange teacher coming to the University of Tromsø you will be assisted in resolving practical matters, such as finding accommodation.
Administrative visits
The many details pertaining to the administration and organisation of mobility makes administrative visits to partner institutions very valuable in order to facilitate and enhance student and teacher exchange. Support for administrative visits are offered under the Erasmus programme and in the disciplinary networks of the Nordplus programme (only for partner institutions in the Nordic countries) and in the Barentsplus programme (only for partner institutions in northern Norway and northwest Russia).
Administrative staff involved in international relations, in preparation and implementation of student and teacher mobility, at department, faculty or central level are eligible for support.
Please contact the institutional Erasmus coordinator at your home institution.
Preparatory visits
Before establishing a cooperation agreement it is a good idea to pay a visit to the prospective partner institution. Ideally, both the academic(s) and the administrative person(s) to be involved in the future activities should participate. Preparatory visits are eligible for support under the Erasmus programme. Please contact the institutional Erasmus coordinator or the National Agency for the administration of the Socrates programme.
Preparatory visits can be supported also from the Barentsplus programme (Northwest Russia).
Language courses
These courses are open to full time students who are studying other subjects, for example full time students at Master’s degree programmes, exchange students or freemovers. Employees at the University of Tromsø may also attend the evening courses.
The courses normally run every semester and give no credits. The courses are offered at beginning and intermediate levels (level 1 - 2), depending on funding and number of students. Each course lasts 12 weeks with 5 hours of instruction per week. Classes will take place late afternoons and evenings, and they will start shortly after the beginning of every semester.
Students apply for courses after arriving in Tromsø.
If you want to study Norwegian at an advanced level (level 3) you have to send in an application. The application deadline is 1 December 2007 for the spring semester 2008. For more information, click here.

Guest researchers and guest lecturers
When planning for a stay in Norway there are a number of practical matters to be taken care of before leaving your own country and also after arrival. Some of them are tied to national authorities such as residence permit/work permit, while other issues are linked to your final destination; housing, schools, etc.
Information concerning these matters will be made available at a later stage by the Department of Personnel.
