Biology from a northern perspective
| Key words for the department’s academic activity are terrestrial biology, northern ecosystems and climate. Biology is currently undergoing an extremely exciting time based on new knowledge about the genetic material of biological organisms and advanced technology. This provides opportunities to study micro organisms, plants and animals and their function in nature in new ways. |
|
The department utilises modern molecular methods, advanced analysis methods and statistics and modelling and offers education in these areas. Much of the activity is a combination of field and laboratory work. Programmes offering only field or laboratory work are also available.
The department undertakes teaching and research within: botany, zoology, plant physiology and microbiology. The department offers six different Master’s degree programmes: botanical biodiversity, environmental botany/palaeoecology, northern populations, evolution, plant biology and Arctic microbiology/microbial ecology. The five-year interdisciplinary Master of Arctic Natural Resource Management and Agriculture is also offered.
