| Reconstructed Viking longhouse, Borg, Lofoten |
The Department of Archaeology conducts material culture research with particular focus on the northern regions (northern Fennoscandinavia and elsewhere in the circumpolar world) as well as the theoretical foundation of the discipline. Within this broad framework we emphasize Sami archaeology, historical archaeology and feminist perspectives, and we offer programs in cultural heritage management. We are also developing our methodological side, such as the application of geographical information systems and spatial analysis.
The Department has contacts and cooperation with scholars in a range of countries, including: Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, England, USA, Canada, Botswana and Cameroon.
