Biofilmer er avanserte samfunn av bakterier som beskytter bakteriene mot vertens immunforsvar. Biofilmer består avbakterier holdt sammen av ulike organiske molekyler som danner en type slim. Forskjellige bakterier benytter seg avforskjellige molekyler, noe som påvirker egenskapene.
De siste 20 årene har man sett en kraftig økning i forekomstenav sykehusinfeksjoner forårsaket av koagulase-negative stafylokker (KNS). Evnen til å danne biofilm anses som den viktigste faktoren i KNS sin evne til å forårsake sykdom. Avhandlingen bidrar til den generelle kunnskapen om biofilmene til KNS og kunnskapen om interaksjonen slike biofilmer har med det humane immunsystemet.
Jørn Remi Henriksen Philosophiae doctor med avhandlingen Targeted MYCN suppression and its effect on miRNAin neuroblastoma.
Neuroblastom er en av de vanligste krefttyper hos barn, og de mest aggressive tilfellene har ofte høyt uttrykk av onkogenet MYCN. Unormalt uttrykk av enkelte mikroRNA kanv ære en medvirkende årsak til at celler skal kunne opptresom ondartede kreftceller. Avhandlingen omtaler hvordan man kan nedregulere et hvilket som helst gen på det tidspunktsom er ønskelig i cellelinjer. Videre beskrives cellelinjer isolert fra neuroblastom-svulster der uttrykket av MYCN kan senkes.
Når MYCN nedreguleres endres egenskapene til cellene. De vokser saktere og endrer utseende til et som er mindre forbundet med ondartede kreftceller. Uttrykket av mikroRNA endres når MYCN reduseres, og de tbeskrives hvordan enkelte mikroRNA øker i mengde, mens andre reduseres. Både mikroRNA som økes og senkes blir deretter studert nærmere. Generelt er mikroRNA som blir oppregulert av MYCN mer viktig for kreftegenskapene tilcellene. Det påvises hvordan et tumor suppressorgen blir direkte nedregulert av mikroRNA som er oppregulert av MYCN.
