Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Art opened in 2007 and offers a BA and an MA in Contemporary Art (from January 2012). In 2009 the University`s Creative Writing Course (Forfatterstudiet i Tromsø) was also included in the Academy. The institution aims to educate artists on a high professional level and contribute to new expertise in the field of contemporary art. Key values are artistic integrity, sustainability, critical awareness, and responsibility.

The Academy is located in Tromsø, Northern Norway, beyond the Arctic Circle. Since its early days, the town has served as a focal point in the culturally diverse circumpolar area. In this setting, the Academy of Contemporary Art aspires to develop new forms of artistic practice with a focus on place, context and identity. Insight into cultural, social and ethnic disparities increases the potential for a sustainable practice of art. The understanding of the historical division between nature and culture - human ecology - is emphasized.

Master in Contemporary Art
Next application: Deadline on September 15th, 2013. The profile of the Academy serves as the fundament for the Master Programme and the key values are artistic integrity, sustainability, critical awareness and responsibility. The aim to cultivate these qualities is reflected in the organisational structure and pedagogical groundwork of the Academy. The programme aspires to create an environment in which the students develop abilities to investigate Thematic Fields, which before each two-year study period is decided upon by an Advisory Board. The Thematic Fields are related to the specific context of the Academy in Tromsø as well as the global, critical discourse.

CREATIVE WRITING (Forfatterstudiet i Tromsø)

The program is structured around intensive writing workshops with professional writers. The aim is to challenge and cultivate the students creative writing skills through critical reading and tutoring, encouraging experimentation and boldness. Students will become critical readers and learn to recognize quality. The programme provides knowledge of the literary language and its tools, the development of Norwegian literature in recent times, as well as insight into genre theory and literary theory. The fundament of the programme is the students` own production of literary texts and active participation in the workshop.

Creative Writing: Application deadline 1st of March 2013
Applicants must master a scandinavian language.

Admission requirements (in Norwegian):

• Generell studiekompetanse eller realkompetanse
• bestått opptaksprøve som består av 15 – 20 s. tekstprøve fra et manus som bør totalt være på minst 40 s.
• et motivasjonsbrev.
