Welcome to the EPINOR homepage!
EPINOR (The PhD school for EPIdemiological research in the high NORth) will contribute to high-quality education of research in epidemiological theory, methodology and method connected to specific issues of the High North.

Organization
The EPINOR PhD school was established in 2007, funded by the University of Tromsø and is formally organized as a part of Department of Community Medicine (ISM). A board consisting of members from ISM, the research network and PhD students has regular meetings to ensure that activities and courses maintain high quality and contribute to build the profile of EPINOR.
Profile
The close links to a broad circumpolar research network is an important part of EPINOR’s profile. Traditional life-style related diseases and new environmental health threats are among the research areas where epidemiological methods are to investigate causes of disease and pathogenetic mechanisms and to develop prevention strategies.
The PhD school will unify epidemiologic research in the High North and ensure a continued quality and diversity in this field.
Activities
Established PhD courses in epidemiology, statistics, and ethics allow the students at EPINOR to get a deeper understanding of the specific health challenges in the North in a network with students from all over the world. EPINOR students also work together in seminars for reflection and discussion of topics of common interest.
The environment is international with courses and seminars in English. For the time being EPINOR has more than 40 PhD students from Russia, Brazil, Sri Lanka, the Faroe Islands, Nepal and Norway.
The running projects cover a wide range of topics with an epidemiologic focus; cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, maternal health, rheumatology, occupational medicine, infectious medicine, health services, anthropology and environmental pollutants.
How to become an EPINOR associate member
PhD students may apply to be an associate member of the EPINOR and as such participate in the full package of courses, seminars and workshops.
The individual PhD courses are open for PhD students from other research institutions.
