Proficiency in English
As a general requirement, all applicants to Norwegian Higher Education have to document their proficiency in English on advanced level, either through education or an internationally recognized examination/test. Only applicants from certain countries are exempted from this requirement. Please check the English language test requirements carefully before applying.
Proficiency in English can be certified through any of the following tests:
Master level studies:
- TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 550 (paper-based)/ 187 (computer-based)/ 66 (Internet-based). Institutional code: 0742.
- IELTS: International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a minimum of 6.0 points
- APIEL: Advanced Placement International English Language Examination (APIEL) with a minimum of 3 points
- MELAB: Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) with a minimum of 85 points
- University of Cambridge Exams: First Certificate English, Certificate in Advanced English, Certificate of Proficiency in English
Bachelor level studies:
- TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 500 (paper-based)/ 170 (computer-based)/ 60 (Internet-based). Institutional code: 0742.
- IELTS: International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a minimum of 5.0 points
- APIEL: Advanced Placement International English Language Examination (APIEL) with a minimum of 3 points
- MELAB: Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) with a minimum of 85 points
- University of Cambridge Exams: First Certificate English, Certificate in Advanced English, Certificate of Proficiency in English
The following categories of applicants are exempted from the English test requirement:
- Applicants from countries under the EU/ EEA who can document that they have had English as their first foreign language in primary/secondary school for at least 7 years
- Students accepted within the framework of an exchange programme or a bilateral agreement, although a good command of English is recommended.
- Applicants who have a Bachelors degree in English language and litterature or similar can apply for an exemption.
- Citizens of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand or USA who have completed at least one year of academic studies at a college or university in one of these countries.
