PhD proposals with a detailed study plan (about 10 A4 pages) are welcome. Successful applicants include the necessary systematic review of current evidence as a starting point. Suggestions include (i) minimally invasive periodontal treatments in comparison, (ii) image analysis as surrogate to periodontal regeneration true endpoints, (iii) site-specific analysis of gingival responses to antimicrobial/antiinflammatory oral hygiene supplements, (iv) high-throughput microbiological analyses of the composition of microbiota in different intraoral habitats.
Note: I am pretty much convinced that site-specific clinical observations are most valuable and of utmost importance in the understanding of periodontal diseases. Unfortunately, in recent years, these observations have frequently been summarized at the subject level. While doing so, much of the collected information is lost. Since site-specific analysis of periodontal data may yield an amazing deal of new information regarding the pathogenesis of periodontal disease, I would invite anybody who owns site-specific data, which has been conventionally analyzed before with the subject as statistical unit, to share his/her data in order to do a correct, i.e., multilevel analysis.

On the occasion of the Annual Meeting of Scandinavian Society of Periodontology in Bergen/Norway, the paper "Multilevel modeling of gingival bleeding on probing during pregnancy" by M. Gürsoy, E. Könönen, U.K. Gürsoy, R. Pajukanta, T. Sorsa and H.P. Müller has been awarded the SScP Young Researcher Award 2011.
The discipline of Periodontology deals with the development, anatomy, structure, and function of the various soft and hard tissues of the periodontium in health and disease, i.e., gingiva, periodontal ligament, root cementum, and alveolar bone proper. It concerns diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of the various diseases and conditions affecting the periodontal tissues. There are close relationships to oral microbiology and immunology, and community medicine. The impact of periodontal disease on non-oral diseases has to be considered as well. There are also close relationships to esthetic dentistry as well as implant dentistry.
Practical issues of Periodontology include treatment modalities for the different diseases and conditions of the periodontium, techniques, and instrumentation. Treatment of the periodontally diseased patient should be considered within the framework of comprehensive dental care.
