1983-1985: Female dentists' life course and professional careers, and dental students' expectancies toward their professional career, and,

1986-1987: Dental health behaviour and musculo-sceletal problems in dentists.

As a student, I took a year off (1983-1984) from dental school to be a research scholar at the Institute for Community Dentistry, University of Oslo. The research project concerned female dentists' life course and professional career, and dental students' expectations towards their professional career. Dorthe Holst was my supervisor. After graduation I started to do research on dental health behaviour, and on the prevalence of musculo-skeletal diseases in Norwegian dentists.

1988-1990: The Youth survey 1988 and the Youth survey 1989
Research assistant at the National Institute of Public Health, AIDS-information unit. In 1988 and 1989 two nation-wide, representative questionnaire surveys among 3000 17-19 year olds in Norway was conducted. My thesis is built upon the results from these surveys. Based on my thesis and other research on the sexuality of young adults, I have written popular books on the topic. The studies were financed by the Directorate of Health. Collaborators were Pål Kraft and Jostein Rise (National Institute of Public Health), Jon Martin Sundet (University of Oslo) and Bo Lewin (University of Uppsala).

1991-1994: Public drinking in Norway
Assistant professor at the National Institute of Alcohol and Drug Research (SIFA). I worked on a project on drinking at public drinking places in Norway, and particularly in Oslo. The studies were financed by the Department of Social Affaires, and co-workers were Sturla Nordlund and Ingeborg Rossow (both SIFA).

1995-1999: Alcohol and Sexuality in the era of Aids.
The project "Alcohol and Sexuality in the era of AIDS" in 1995 was my postdoctorial project. The purpose of the project was to study the relationship between alcohol consumption and sexuality in urban Norwegians, by means of quantitative and qualitative data. In 1995 the data collection for the qualitative sub-study was carried out, and two years later the quantitative questionnaire survey got financial support and could be carried out. Collaborators were Arild Hovland and Guro Ødegård, NOVA, Bo Lewin, Department of Sociology, University of Uppsala, Elina Haavio-Mannila, Department of Sociology, University of Helsinki, Stephen Clift, Canterbury Christ Church College, Centre for Health Education and Research, Canterbury. The project was funded by the Norwegian Research Council (NFR).

1999-2002: Health education and intervention
With financing from The Norwegian Research Council the project "Effect of intervention to prevent unintended pregnancy among adolescents. A randomised, prospective study" was launched in August 1999 among 10th grad adolescents in compulsory schools (15 year-olds) in Nordland. The purpose of the project was, to develop, carry out and evaluate the effect of an intervention intended to prevent unwanted pregnancy among adolescents. I was the project leader, and conducted the studies all by myself. The project was funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The past years I have written papers from this data material together with Ingela Lundin Kvalem (NOVA), Bo Lewin (University of Uppsala), and Sven-Ove Samuelsen (University of Oslo). I have also written three articles based on Ingela L. Kvalem's survey on sexual behaviour in adolescents in the Norwegian county Vestfold.

1987-2008: The Norwegian Sexual Behaviour Studies
The purpose of the Norwegian sexual behaviour studies is to monitor sexual behaviour in the general Norwegian population, and explain the relationship between sexual behaviour and various psychological and demographic explanatory variables. I have also written paper based on the Norwegian sex surveys in 1987, 1992, 1997 and 2002. I am involved in the new sexual behaviour survey in 2007. Collaborators are Hein Stigum, Per Magnus, and Jon Martin Sundet, National Institute of Public Health, Oslo. In 1997, the survey was part of an international collaborative project, and the purpose of the collaboration was to develop a common questionnaire on sexual behaviour and to compare sexual behaviour in European countries. The Norwegian researchers worked together with Dr. Michel Hubert and the NEM group (researchers from Belgum, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Portugal, Spain, England, the Netherlands and Norway), Centre d'études Sociologiques, Brüssel.

2004: Immigrant women, sexuality and abortion. A qualitative approach
The purpose of this research was to explore the social and sexual realities of Pakistani immigrant women seeking abortion. Project leader was Dr. Siri Vangen, National Institute of Public Health, Oslo.

2004-2007: Sexuality among people with heart disease
The purpose of the project was to study sexual problems/dysfunctions and sexual well-being in people with acquires and congenital heart disease. Data was collected by means of self-administered questionnaires. I am the project leader of this project, and have master students as collaborators. The Norwegian Association of Heart and Lung Patients financed the project.

2006-2008: Sexuality in couples
The purpose of this research was to study the prevalence of reduced sexual desire, extradyadic activity and use of pornography in a random sample of Norwegian married or cohabiting couples. Data was collected by means of self-administered questionnaires. I am the project leader. Collaborators are Monica Martinussen and Bas Verplanken at the University of Tromsø, Kristian Daneback and Sven-Axel Månsson at the University of Göteborg/Malmö, and Katarina Öberg at Karolinska University Hospital. The newspaper Dagbladet financed the study.

2006-2008: Reduced sexual desire in men and women
The purpose of this qualitative project was to conduct in-depth interviews with persons with reduced sexual interest/desire about their understanding of their sexuality. I am the project leader and have conducted all 22 interviews myself. The project was financed by the University of Tromsø and the Norwegian Research Council.

2004-2007: Sexual abuse
How is incest terminated? Which causes are attributed to the termination of abuse, and how do the victims perceive their own role in the termination process? Qualitative in-depth interviews were used to elucidate the research questions. I was the project leader of this project, which was carried out in collaboration with 2 master students in psychology. The project was financed by the University of Tromsø.

2004-2007: Sexual orientation and happiness in a cross cultural perspective
The purpose of the project was to examine differences in quality of life among straight men and women, and lesbian/gay and bisexual university students in Havana (Cuba), Cape Town (South Africa), Tromsø (Norway) and Hisar (India). Possible differences in sexual orientation groups were tested for, differences in quality-of-life measures such as subjective well being, satisfaction with life, subjective happiness, and emotional state. Another aim of the study was to explore and compare attitudes toward sexuality among heterosexual and homo/bisexual respondents in the four sites. Data was collected by means of self-administered questionnaires. Collaborators are Monica Martinussen, and Joar Vittersø, at the University of Tromsø. The project was financed by the University of Tromsø.

2004-2007: Female horseback riders
A qualitative interview study addressed the following questions: What does the horse mean to girls' socialisation and development? Why are girls so fond of horses? A quantitative study among riders was also undertaken. The aim of the questionnaire study among members of 3 riding clubs was to explore the relationship between the perception of gender attribution in terms of femininity, androgyny and masculinity, self-esteem and self-efficacy in female horseback riders, controlled for age, level of education and being a horse owner or not. I was the project leader for both sub-projects. Collaborators were Catharina Wang at the University of Tromsø, and master students at the same institution. The project was financed by the University of Tromsø.
