Jeg har ledet ICES/NAFO Pandalus arbeidsgruppe og vært medlem i flere arbeidsgrupper innenfor ICES (Benthos, Nephrops-Pandalus, Arctic Fisheries, Pandalus) og NAFO (Scientific Council, Standing Committee on Fisheries Science). Våren 2006 bestod jeg kurs i styrekompetanse ved BI, Tromsø.

Jeg har deltatt i doktorgrads-, bedømmelses- og tilsettingskomiteer samt gjennomført en rekke evalueringsarbeid nasjonalt og internasjonalt, bl.a. for Norges forskningsråd, Nordisk ministerråd, EU-kommisjonen og et miljøsertifiseringsbyrå.
Ved Norges fiskerihøgskole, NORUT og Fiskeriforskning har jeg hatt flerårige styreverv. Jeg har vært medlem av programstyret for "Ordningen for fiskeri og veiledningstjeneste" samt Forskingsrådsprogrammene "IT i fiskerinæringen" og "Marine ressurser og miljø". Ved Norges fiskerihøgskole, NORUT og Fiskeriforskning har jeg hatt flerårige styreverv. Forskningsinteresser

Mitt vitenskaplige arbeid dekker et vidt spekter av forskningsaktiviteter innenfor marin økologi, populasjons biologi samt ressurs- og økosystemforvaltning fremst i Barentshavet og i Svalbard sonen og ved Jan Mayen. Jeg har publisert flere diversitets studier av marine benthos- og fiske samfunn, larve økologi, prøvetakingsteori, arts interaksjonen, bioøkonomi, og aspekter rundt regulering av fiskerier og marine verneområder. Jeg har arbeidet i åpent hav og i isdekket farvann i studiene av benthossamfunn på bløt bunn og hardbunn på haneskjellfelt, rekenes populasjons biologi og fiske arters utbredelse i relasjon til temperatur og klima. Forskningsprosjekter

Benthossamfunn og -økologi

I mine studier har jeg brukt bl.a. multivariatanalyser for å studere antropogene effekter og miljøeffekter på faunaen. Hovedfagsarbeidet omhandlet bunndyrsamfunn i den finske skjærgården med fokus på prøvetakingsmetodikk (2). Deretter arbeidet jeg med komparative mesokosm- og feltstudier, med fokus på dataanalysemetoder, med bl.a. professor John Grey, UiO (1). Jeg analyserte effektene av redusert eutrofiering på bunndyr i Oslofjorden (4), og har skrevet oppsummerende artikler om bunndyrenes respons på miljøgradienter (3) og latitudegradienter (5). I licensiatavhandlingen oppsummerte jeg resultatene fra flere arbeid (1-4) og presenterte strategier for forurensingsstudier og overvåking. Jeg har deltatt i planlegging og etablering av overvåking av effekter av kongekrabbe, og har også arbeidet med overvåkingsplan for Barentshavet, samt initiert registrering av evertebrater under Havforskningsinstituttets økosystemtokt. I 2002 gjennomførte jeg i samarbeid med Akvaplan-niva en epibentisk studie i Barentshavet (6). Jeg har også studert effektene av haneskjellfisket på hardbunnsfauna i nordøst-Atlanteren (tre ICES rapporter).

Populasjonsstudier

I perioden 1991-2006 hadde jeg ansvaret for å utvikle bestandstakseringen av dypvannsreke og med basis i dette har jeg studert rekens biologi i Barentshavet (8), ved Svalbard (9) og Jan Mayen (13) samt andre områder der norske båter driver rekefiske. Jeg har initiert og ledet NFR-prosjekter på bestandsidentitet hos reker, der vi brukte allozym- (7) og DNA-analyser (11). I 1999 fikk jeg bevilget et nytt NFR-prosjekt om rekenes rekrutteringsbiologi. Vi studerte rekelarvenes morfologi og vekst i felt og i laboratoriet (16) og modellerte og verifiserte larvespredningen i Barentshavet (10). Jeg modellerte rekrutteringssuksess som funksjon av gytebiomasse, miljøparametre og predasjon (12). Sammen med kolleger fra Canada, Grønland, USA og Grønland, som også forsker på reker i Nord-Atlanteren, har jeg nylig fått akseptert et arbeide i Science som omhandler sammenhengen mellom rekenes fenologi og tilgang på fytoplankton (15). Jeg har også arbeidet med vekst og utbredelse hos arktisk fisk (14).

Bestandsanalyse og forvaltning

Jeg har arbeidet med optimal prøvetaking i bestandsberegningen av reke som primært har basert seg på "swept area" estimater og publisert flere arbeider innenfor dette feltet (17, 18, 19). I all rådgivning og modellering har jeg og mine kolleger forsøkt å inkludere torskens betydning som predator. Vi har vist at rekebiomassen ikke reguleres av det målbare torskekonsumet og at interaksjonen mellom torskebestanden og rekebestanden antakelig etableres på yngelstadiet (25). I samarbeid med russiske og norske kolleger har jeg evaluert reguleringene for vern av fiskeyngel i rekefisket i et biologisk og i et bioøkonomisk perspektiv og gitt innspill til nye kriterier (20, rapporter).

De siste årene har jeg analysert fiskesamfunn (21, 22) og identifisert endringer i Barentshavet som en konsekvens av klimaendringer, studert interaksjonen mellom artene i økosystemet samt anbefalt homogene forvaltningsområder for overvåking (24).

Jeg har vært involvert i miljøsertifisering av to Canadiske rekefiskerier (23a, 23b) og dermed engasjert meg i "chain of custody" sertifisering, dvs. prosedyren som skal sikre at et miljømerket produkt som presenteres konsumenten faktisk har den angitte opprinnelsen og ikke kommer fra et annet, i verste fall illegalt, fiskeri. I denne sammenheng er det viktig å ha metoder for kartlegging av sporbarhet (26), og det vil også være behov for verifisering av bestandstilhørighet og opprinnelse.

1995-1998, Factors influencing trawl efficiency in shrimp surveys. Associate Professor Roger Larsen was the project leader and the project was financed by the Research Council of Norway.

1996, A Mission in Belize that reviewed the fishery and the fishing industry and gave recommendations on sustainable management of fisheries resources, the adequacy of government support, oversight and enforcement, and current fishing, processing and marketing politics conducted together with Senior Researcher Nils-Kristan Sørensen. Financed by Inter-American Development Bank.

1996-1997, Northern Shrimp research in the North Atlantic-State of art and future research, international project financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

2002-2004, Marine protected areas as a fisheries management tool- A bioeconomic analysis with emphasis on management cost and uncertainty. Associate Professor Claire Armstrong at the Norwegian College of Fishery Science is in charge of the project, and I contribute as fisheries biologist. The project was financed by the Research Council of Norway.

Result-Based Fisheries Management, FishMan, small collaborative project, EU-FP7-KBBE-2008-1-4-03: Fisheries management approach based on 'maximum acceptable limits of negative impacts. Application submitted February 2008, rejected April 2007. New call with the same topic announced in 2009. Resubmission in January 2010.

1985-1987, Participant on cruises mapping the macrozoobenthos of the Baltic Sea, 1982, the Oslofjord and Frierfjord, Norway.

1987-1991, Participant on several cruises studying fauna of the scallop banks and soft bottom communities in the NE Atlantic.

1992-2004, In charge of annual shrimp cruises conducted in the Barents Sea and the Svalbard area, sampling included pelagic- and groundfish, zooplankton and benthos.
