Exceptional case history registry
The Exceptional case history registry (RESF) is a Scandinavian registry collecting information from people who have experienced an unusual course of serious disease after using alternative treatment compared to what was expected based upon medical examinations. The registry is run by The National Research Center in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NAFKAM) at the University of Tromsø, Norway. The center is established by the Research Council of Norway and is financed by the Ministry of Health and Care Services.

We would like to get in touch with • Persons who have experienced an exceptionally good or bad course of disease • Relatives of persons who have experienced an exceptionally good or bad course of disease • CAM practitioners who have witnessed exceptional case histories in their practice • Conventional medical doctors or others within the established healthcare system who have met patients with exceptionally good or bad courses of disease
What is an "exceptional case history"? An exceptional case history is a clinical course of serious disease that is very different from what was expected based upon medical examinations: The clinical course of the disease could either be exceptionally good and presented as a "best case", or it could be exceptionally bad and presented as a "worst case":
• A "best case" could be full- or long term recovery of cancer or other serious disease with a poor prognosis after treatment with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). • A "worst case" could be when the use of CAM gives serious side effects or contributes to delayed conventional medical treatment, with serious consequences for the course of the disease.
What is alternative treatment?
Alternative treatment is a wide concept that can have many different definitions. In this register we include all initiatives that the patient him/herself defines as alternative compared to the established health care system. Some examples are acupuncture, reflexology, homeopathy, massage, mental training, religious healing, healing and special supplements such as herbs, etc.
Do you have a history that could be included in our registry? You can register here (in Norwegian), or you can contact NAFKAM by phone +47 77 64 66 50 or e-mail nafkam@fagmed.uit.no.
